World Health Organisation – Hearing Loss Update

The World Health Organisation (WHO) updated its Deafness and Hearing Loss factsheet on 9 February, stating that unaddressed hearing loss “poses an annual global cost of 750 billion international dollars”, and adding, “interventions to prevent, identify and address hearing loss are cost-effective and can bring great benefit to individuals.”

The organisation also published materials for World Hearing Day which will take place on 3 March 2017 and this year has the theme, ‘Action for hearing loss: make a sound investment’.

In other related news, the WHO also recently highlighted the importance of including rehabilitation services in health systems, including making hearing aids more accessible, in order to support people achieve and maintain optimal functioning.
