Google celebrates British Sign Language and first school for the deaf

Google used its home page this week to celebrate the first school for deaf children in the UK, founded by Thomas Braidwood in 1760.

The Braidwood Academy in Edinburgh was also the first to include sign language in education, contributing to the development of British Sign Language (BSL) in its current form.

To commemorate this, Google also uploaded a ‘Doodle’ video of schoolchildren signing the alphabet using BSL.

The internet giant called the online tribute: “a celebration of the Braidwood Academy’s work but also of the importance of education for all students with their diversity of needs”.
